ShardQuest, Part V

Triumph in Dylvwyllynn

Our story so far:

After recovering the Shard of Noon from the ancient dwarven city of Dylvwyllynn and seeing two of their comrades fall, our heroes travel back to Voonlar to seek reinforcements and hopefully raise their fallen friends. Voonlar, however, has been overrun with forces sympathetic to the god Cyric, forces which diametrically oppose the god worshiped by Lady Shrae, Chauntea.

After Lady Shrae informs the party of what has happened in Voonlar since they were gone, she sadly states that she cannot resurrect Jordan or Dalin, and knows of no one in the area with the power to do so. The party tells her of their need for a mage and a cleric, but she states she cannot spare anyone from the church because of the chaos in Voonlar. Kathrynn, a female human Ranger, and Arwen Ravenwood (or just "Raven"), a female elf mage, agree to join the party. The next morning our heroes once again set out for Dylvwyllynn.

Upon arrival at the city, the party sets out for the lair of the Mind Flayers. Along the way, two Drow are subdued. Knowing the Shard of Midnight is in Drow hands, the captives are questioned, but to no avail. In a moment of rage, Tiron seals them inside of a stone tomb, shouting, "Remember, it is not I who have killed you... it is up to your god now!" (Tiron's god, Corellon, apparently hates Drow.)

The party eventually arrives at the stairwell leading down into the Mind Flayers lair. After dispatching of several Trolls (Raphael quickly learns that Trolls are suckers for illusionary fireballs), our heroes find an area which appears to be of new construction, and head down it. When Brau'ni requests that Delf scan an area for a secret door, Delf mouths off, complaining, "Why should we bother checking for secret doors when there's a passage right here we haven't explored yet?" Brau'ni responds in kind, snapping, "Listen, you dumb helf, just do it, okay?" The other party members don't know what to make of this exchange, but have little time to act on it as three Trolls appear from around the corner. A minute later a Mind Flayer appears, blasting out its psionic attack.

Delf and the three Trolls succumb to it. Brau'ni tries to clamber over the body of the Troll just fallen in front of him, but he and Rolonda are the next to fall before the withering attack of the Mind Flayer. Tiron and Kathrynn try going around to attack the Mind Flayer from the rear, but Kathrynn is subdued and whisked away to a room. The door is closed just as Tiron and Raven arrive. Tiron nearly breaks his foot trying to kick in the locked door, but Raven has much more success with her Knock spell. They see Kathrynn, still stunned, lying on a table in what appears to be some sort of laboratory, the Mind Flayer standing over her. Their shock allows the Mind Flayer to hurl a jar at their feet, which bursts into flames, toppling Raven. Rolonda, recently released from her stunned state by Raven and Cel, appears and fires a poisoned dart at the Mind Flayer. The flayer, hit by the dart, falls to the ground stunned and as good as dead.

After Raven is revived, the party searches the room and finds detailed notes describing how to concoct the Dust of Contrariness. "That's how they killed the Micanids!" Raven exclaims. "They turned them against each other! That must be what happened to Brau'ni and Delf." Suddenly Brau'ni, on guard outside of the room, yells, "Mind Flayer! Let's go!" Raven gathers up the notes and Tiron lights the room on fire. The party is able to get away from the Mind Flayer without incident, and a minute later hears a tremendous explosion. "I hope that tentacle-headed bastard was in there," sneers Kathrynn.

The party heads back to the Micanids, who are overjoyed with the notes the party gives them. True to their word, the Micanids give the party the silver hemisphere, and give them directions to the Drow stronghold.

After repeated attempts to activate the shard and the hemisphere fail, Tiron decides to hide the hemisphere so it will not have be lugged to the Drow stronghold. After Tiron stone shapes rock around it, our heroes set out for the Drow and the Shard of Midnight.

After some travel, the party in confronted by four Drow at the entrance to a large room. After only a minute or so of hand-to-hand combat, the Drow step back into the room. "It looks like they're trying to draw us into the room," warns Delf. "Well, it's going to work," replies Brau'ni as he steps into the room...

Without warning, Brau'ni is attacked by an Umber Hulk. Reeling back under the ferocity of the attack, Brau'ni is suddenly confused as to why he's here and stands still, a perplexed expression on his face. The Umber Hulk then goes after Delf. Delf, occupied with trying to keep the Umber Hulk from ripping him to shreds, is unable to fend off the attack of one of the Drow, and falls to the ground, poisoned. A moment later, that same Drow reels back, blinded by Raven's Color Spray cell. "What I am doing here?" Raven yells suddenly, panic creeping into her voice. Without warning she runs down the corridor, away from the battle. Raphael, seeing the evil grin on the face of the Drow which attacked Raven, blinds the Drow and turns the grin into a maw of terror. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the party have done some extensive damage to the Umber Hulk and it retreats, burrowing into solid rock. The two remaining Drow, not done yet, strike Cel with their poisoned swords, knocking her unconscious. Tiron casts a successful Hold Person on the two remaining Drow and the battle is over. Tiron is able to retrieve Cel from the brink of death and revive Brau'ni and Delf. Raven returns to the group a little while later and the party plans their next move, now aware that a frontal assault on the Drow stronghold may not be the best course of action.

Delf and Kathrynn are turned invisible and set out in search of the Drow. After some searching, they come across footprints and follow them into a passageway. At the end of the passageway is a four-way intersection. Three of the passageways are blocked by a heavy gate. While pondering how to get past the gate, two Drow enter the passageway and levitate the gate up, pass under it and levitate it back down. Delf and Kathrynn head back to the party.

Upon hearing of the situation, Raphael reasons he should be able to go to wraith form while invisible, slip through the gate, and search for the Shard. If he finds it, he can become solid, grab the Shard, go to wraith form once again, and slip out undetected. Raven offers Raphael her Fly potion to make travel inside easier. Kathrynn leads him to the gate and Raphael executes his plan. He eventually enters a room with banners hanging from the ceiling, each depicting a gruesome scene from Drow history. The banners extend from the ceiling to floor, each only a couple of feet away from its neighbor, making it very easy for an intruder to be entangled and also impossible for hand-to-hand combat. Advancing carefully through the banners, Raphael sees Drow guards positioned in the room, hidden in the banners. Then he sees something very interesting... an inky blackness in the center of the room, shimmering and unpenetrable. "The Shard has to be in there," thinks Raphael, "but how do I get to it?" Unsure of what to do next, Raphael heads back to party.

The party decides that Raphael should wait till nightfall and go back to the Drow. Perhaps the Drow High Priestess will take a walk into the darkness? Raphael rests and sets out for the Drow at 10 p.m., once again accompanied by Kathrynn.

Raphael gets back into the room with the darkness, allows his wraith form to wear off and waits for someone to enter the blackness. Finally, after an agonizingly long hour of torturous waiting, Raphael sees the High Priestess! He goes to wraith form once again, carefully following her as she makes her way through the banners and walks into the darkness. He plunges in after her...

For what seems like an eternity, Raphael blindly stumbles through the inky blackness, brushing against things which would surely kill him if he was not in wraith form. Finally the darkness melts away and his heart fills up with joy at the item he sees laying on an altar in front of the High Priestess... The Shard of Midnight!

Raphael quietly moves as far away from the priestess as he can and once again allows the wraith form to wear off. After what seems like another eternity, but what is in reality only thirty minutes, the priestess finally stops chanting and gets up and leaves, leaving the Shard behind! After waiting another minute, Raphael crosses over to the altar, grabs the Shard, goes to wraith form, carefully makes his way through the darkness, and gets out of the Drow stronghold undetected.

"Kathrynn, I have it!" whispers Raphael outside of the gate. "That's great! Let's go!" replies Kathrynn, and they head back to the party. The party, overjoyed at Raphael's success, decides to pack up camp and get out of Drow territory quickly, before they realize the Shard is gone. "Man, I wish I could be there to see the look on her face..." Raphael smiles as our heroes make their way back the place where they hid the hemisphere. The hemisphere is retrieved without incident, final goodbyes are said to the Gnomes, and our heroes head back to Voonlar with two of the three Shards of the Day and the silver hemisphere which holds them.

To be continued...
